Osteopathy for Pregnancy
Your body goes through enormous change during pregnancy, and it doesn't always adjust evenly. We help settle the aches that come with a shifting centre of gravity, loosening ligaments and changing posture, through every trimester.
Why does pregnancy cause back and pelvic pain?
Pregnancy hormones loosen the ligaments around your pelvis and spine to prepare your body for birth, but that same looseness can make joints less stable and more prone to strain. At the same time, your growing bump shifts your centre of gravity forward, changing your posture and how your spine and pelvis carry load through the day.
Put together, this is why lower back pain, pelvic discomfort and rib tightness are so common in pregnancy, often worse later in the day, after standing for a while, or when rolling over in bed.
Is it safe to see an osteopath during pregnancy?
Yes. Treatment is adapted at every stage: we use side-lying and supported positions rather than asking you to lie flat on your back once that becomes uncomfortable, and we adjust technique to what's appropriate for how far along you are.
Let us know how many weeks pregnant you are and about any pregnancy complications at booking, and always keep your midwife or LMC in the loop about any ongoing symptoms alongside seeing us.
When should I start seeing an osteopath during pregnancy?
Some people come in as soon as discomfort starts, whatever trimester that is. Others prefer regular check-ins through pregnancy as a preventative measure, particularly in the second and third trimester when the bump, and the strain, is at its biggest.
It's also common to continue seeing us after birth, for recovery from labour and the new physical demands of feeding and carrying a newborn.
