What is paediatric osteopathy?

Paediatric osteopathy is hands-on care adapted for children's still-developing bodies. For babies, this is an extremely light touch, nothing like the firmer techniques used with adults. For older children and teenagers, treatment looks much more like the care we give adults, adjusted for their size and comfort.

The focus is the same as any osteopathic care: understanding how a child moves and holds themselves, and supporting comfortable growth and movement as their body changes.

Is osteopathy safe for babies and children?

Yes. Techniques are age-appropriate and gentle, and we always take a full history before treating, including their birth, general health and any concerns you have.

Osteopathy isn't a substitute for your GP, Plunket nurse or paediatrician. For any medical concerns about your baby or child's health, please see your usual healthcare provider first. We're a complement to that care, not a replacement for it.

What can osteopathy help with in children?

We commonly see children for growing pains, postural habits from school bags, screens and desks, general comfort and settling in babies, and recovery support after bumps and knocks from sport and play.

As children grow quickly and unevenly, we also keep an eye on how that affects their movement and coordination over time.

When should I bring my child to an osteopath?

Common reasons include ongoing aches that don't settle, favouring one side of the body, recovering from a sports injury or fall, or simply noticing a change in how they're sitting, standing or moving.

If you're ever unsure whether osteopathy is the right fit, give us a call and we're happy to talk it through before you book.
